Comparing DBA3 and Basic Impetus . . . in what ways does each do something better than the other? (I know that I certainly prefer the larger bases of BI, but what do you like)?
That's a good question. DBA has the advantage of being more well known (at least more so than BI); however that depends on where you are actually. DBA also has been around for over 25 years and it is definitely a very "tight" set of rules. DBA has more army lists, although this isn't really a big deal. BI has the advantage of having more flavor to it; it feels less a game of "geometry" than DBA.
I could go on and on. But you know what? I think both rules are great. Two different styles of play really. Not everyone likes the DBx style of play, with "pips" and exact measurements, and a geometric feel to it. BI however has it's own drawbacks: not everyone likes the unit terms it uses. Believe it or not, not everyone likes the basing either. For some, BIG bases are actually very inconvenient. Imagine that! The good thing though is that you can play BI with DBA bases (just double-up the bases).
Thank you for a terrific report. You have convinced me to go dust down my DBA armies for the Summer!, Mike Cardiff wargames club despertaferres.wordpress.com
