Some Project Changes

Been a while since my last update- damn! I have been so involved with other projects and school that I let this one slip a little. However, I have been thinking about my efforts so far as of late. One thing I have decided on doing is going over to the dark side of skirmish wargaming with this period. A big deal for me, since I don't play too many skirmish type games. What I mean by "skirmish" here is basically any game involving individually based models organized in small units - or acting as individuals. Here is what I have decided so far:

  • remount existing (some/all) collection on single figure bases,
  • deciding on some rules to use
For rules I am opting to try several really. The main one that stands out for me is the old stand-by, Smooth & Rifled. In addition, I will also be playing with the soon to be released rules, The Men Who Would Be Kings, by Dan Mersey - which I did some play-testing with. I played S&R quite a bit three years ago with the ACW, and I liked them. I am pretty sure these will fit the bill at the moment. There will be others I am sure.

You may be wondering at this point why I am switching over from Black Powder and "unit" based rules. Well, the main reason is time and money. I am not so sure I am willing at this point to build up armies - in 15mm anyway - for larger battle rules such as BP. Skirmishing is actually perfect for my interest level at this point. In addition, since getting in to 10mm Napoleonics, I am strongly considering collecting 10mm models for my Colonial period bigger battles. Those little 10mm models have definitely captured my imagination and opened a whole lot of doors for me in this hobby - like Napoleonics. But I digress.

At this point in time, expect to see a complete conversion of my current 15mm collection over to individual based models. This will allow me to take advantage of my collection, and deal with time constraints as well.

Some NEW Forces Have Arrived.

I have been pretty involved as of late with a few NEW wargaming projects - nothing to do with FoW, or modern era wargaming. In fact, I should be adding a NEW blog soon reflecting these efforts. I will be sure to post information on that blog later.

I did manage to get a pretty good battle in a few weeks back - which my side ( the Germans) lost! Ahhh... was a really fun battle. Interesting battle that featured the .26 Panzer v. Old Iron Sides div.  A mech. infantry list v infantry. I have been playing a lot with my infantry list as of late. I mostly play Armor lists, so this is taking getting used to. So far I love the depth infantry provides - not to mention the battles offer many new options tactically.

I also finally got a hold of the Bridge at Remagen book for FoW. I love it so far. I got this mainly to complete my Western Front collection, but also to add some more nasty-ness to my Americans.

Also, I have been doing some painting and adding troops to my forces.

Some Jagdpanthers just completed.

More tank hunters, in this case some StuG replacements, the JagdpzIV L40

Just got these off a friend. These are FOUR more M10's added to my tank destroyers. Note these
 are crewed by brits!

Both my Germans and my Americans received some RECON vehicles including a few jeeps with mortars
and .50 cal MG's, a Greyhound, and some 8 Rads for the Germans.

My Jpanthers getting painted. Also note a NEW objective marker I am working on - a blown-out flak 88 gun.

Some Re-basing and other silliness...

Tonight I finally got around to re-basing some of my FoW miniatures. I realized I needed to do this since in the last couple of battles I had to proxy some of my FJ as PG! Enough of that silliness! So yes, now I have a proper three platoons worth of panzergrenadiers.

While I was at it I also prepped my Nebs and Mortar platoons for final flocking. These and a couple extra PG command teams and I should be ready to finish off the bases with proper spackling and flocking.

I hope to get some more battles in soon; perhaps even this week. Being busy with school and playing L'Art de la Guerre (ancients) has kept me pretty much away from my FoW. Hopefully that will change shortly.

Crossfire Action... and the Tabletop Commanders

In preparation for a Crossfire battle I will be hosting this weekend for the Tabletop Commanders, I have managed to get in a few games this past weekend. Great set of rules if you are looking for a realistic, fast-paced game focused on infantry in WW II. Battles start and flow very realistically - players really feel like commanders in a battle.

These rules came about in the late 90's, and are still available in printed format - On Military Matters carries them here in the U.S. Perfect for company and battalion level battles where infantry are the focus - tanks, off-board artillery, and vehicles are also catered for. I should have more reports and pics up using this set of rules soon in the future. However, there will be a LIVE YouTube event this weekend as well. OI will be sure to post the link around that time so you can have a watch. Otherwise, keep tabs on my YouTube channel.

If you are interested in watching some of the LIVE events we have done with the Tabletop Commanders group, check out the YouTube playlist at the link below:

Here are some pics of my practice sessions featuring U.S. and German forces.

DBA & L'Art de la Guerre with the Tabletop Commanders!

Had an enjoyable day a couple weeks back with the online wargaming group, The Tabletop Commanders. We managed to get in a couple battles featuring the Gauls and Polybian Romans (my favorites). We had three player's in all - not including myself. I managed to pull off a win with my ancient Gauls. Pretty fun battle really. I was able to break through the left flank of the Roman battle line with a powerful (and lucky) charge.

In addition, last week saw up having a go with the L'Art de la Guerre rules as well. I again played in this one - I was the host. I managed a victory once again, although this time I won with the Seleucids v. the army of Gaul. Very fun.

Both sessions above were LIVE on Google Hangouts of course. If you want to watch the events, check out the Tabletop Commanders Playlist below. The playlist is updated soon after each event..

If you have yet to play on-line, I highly recommend giving it a try. All you need is Google Hangouts, a webcam -  if you want to host a game - and you are all set. If interested in joining up, contact me.
